Team news, injuries, lineups, how to watch, and more for Bayern Munich vs. RB Leipzig!
During the summer, Bayern Munich was very active. The team won three friendlies, took home a trophy from the first Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, and proceeded to the United States for an eight-figure prize in the FIFA Club World Cup. Bayern hopes to continue their winning record against RB Leipzig at home, having not lost a season opener since 2011. Bayern has a substantial lead in the upstart rivalry, even with Leipzig’s quick ascent through the Bundesliga divisions (11W-8D-3L). Last season, Yussuf Poulsen’s goal in stoppage time kept Bayern to a 3-3 draw away from home after they triumphed 5-1 there.
Vincent Kompany used the same lineup against Stuttgart the previous weekend. With Jamal Musiala out of the starting lineup, there is more of an open rotation, however Michael Olise spent more time in the middle than Serge Gnabry. Sacha Boey was a logical pick at right back because Konrad Laimer did sustain a calf injury during the Supercup.
More playing time for the youth movement will be demanded by Bayern supporters. Lennart Karl, Wisdom Mike, Jonah Kusi-Asare, and Jonas Urbig are all eager to take center stage following a fantastic summer. Although Tom Bischof is prepared to help, he will be sidelined for at least a month due to the removal of his appendix. Paul Wanner would have been on this list as well, but he was sent permanently to PSV Eindhoven. Raphaël Guerreiro and Kim Min-jae are also available in the rotation.
From an injury perspective, Hiroki Itō, Tom Bischof, Alphonso Davies, Aleksandar Pavlović, and Jamal Musiala will not be available for Bayern. Leipzig employs a number of formations, but they will need to get used to Ole Werner as their new manager. During his four years with SV Werder Bremen, Werner favored a 3-5-2. Loïs Openda is the focal point of Leipzig’s offense after Benjamin Šeško left. Despite being a potent midfield weapon, Xavi Simons may be held out in anticipation of a potential move to Chelsea.
It should be an exciting beginning to the Bundesliga season as Bayern Munich takes on RB Leipzig. While RB Leipzig will try to assemble a strong group of players into a cohesive team, which hasn’t always been the easiest process in East Germany, the Bavarians will want to maintain their position as the current champions.
