Such cooperation is clearly seen as a tool for regional development, social cohesion and the preservation of shared heritage.

Camino Vertical, supported by the Interreg Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) programme focuses on:  Providing added-value to, recovering and improving ancient Jacobean Routes; Awareness raising, and improvement of the tourism offer along the Camino de Santiago; Marketing and digitalization strategies.

It is expected that the project will have many positive impacts d at a local level.

With a budget of 2 613 595.84 EUR (1 960 196.88 EUR ERDF) the project is promoting the tourism resources and cultural and natural heritage linked to the southern and western routes of the Camino de Santiago in Spain and Portugal. The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St.

James, is a network of pilgrimage routes across Europe culminating in the city of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain.

Historically, the pilgrimage routes were primarily Christian pilgrimages to the shrine of the apostle Saint James, whose remains are said to be buried in the city’s cathedral.

It is estimated that upwards on 500,000 people participate in the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela every year, rendering the different routes as major tourist attractions. The number of tourists along the routes is on the increase.
