Only Minor Injuries After Highway 19A Crash Sunday

Parksville, B.C. — June 2, 2025 — A traffic collision along Highway 19A on Sunday afternoon caused significant delays for drivers but, fortunately, resulted in only minor injuries, according to local authorities.

The crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 19A and Corfield Street in Parksville, a busy stretch that often sees increased traffic on weekends, particularly as summer approaches. RCMP officers, paramedics, and local fire crews were quick to respond to the scene, arriving within minutes of the initial 911 call.

Witnesses reported that the crash involved two vehicles: a grey Toyota SUV and a red Ford sedan. Preliminary investigation suggests that the Ford sedan may have attempted a left-hand turn across oncoming traffic when the collision occurred. The impact caused significant front-end damage to both vehicles, with debris scattered across the roadway.

“I heard a loud bang and ran out to see what happened,” said Carol Jensen, a local resident who lives nearby. “It looked bad at first, but the emergency crews were amazing. They got everyone checked out quickly.”

Paramedics assessed four individuals at the scene. Two people were transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital with what officials describe as minor injuries—mainly soft tissue damage and mild concussions. The other two passengers were treated on-site and released without needing hospitalization.

“There were no life-threatening injuries, which is a relief given the nature of the crash,” said Sgt. Mike Harrington of the Oceanside RCMP. “Seatbelts were worn by all occupants, which likely played a significant role in reducing the severity of injuries.”

Highway 19A was reduced to a single lane in both directions for nearly two hours while crews cleared the wreckage and conducted an initial investigation. Traffic was backed up for several kilometers in each direction, with some drivers reporting delays of up to 45 minutes. The road fully reopened shortly before 5 p.m.

The RCMP confirmed that no charges have been laid as of Monday morning, but the investigation is ongoing. Authorities are reviewing dashcam footage and speaking with witnesses to determine whether distracted driving, speed, or other factors contributed to the collision.

Sunday’s crash is the latest in a series of minor incidents along Highway 19A in recent weeks, prompting renewed calls from residents for additional traffic safety measures. Suggestions have included better signage, clearer lane markings, and speed-calming initiatives, especially near intersections with heavy turning traffic.

“I hope this is a wake-up call,” said Parksville City Councillor Dana McCallum. “We’ve had too many close calls and accidents on this stretch. It’s time to make some proactive changes before something worse happens.”

Police are asking any witnesses who have not yet spoken with investigators or anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

Despite the disruption and vehicle damage, the outcome could have been far worse. First responders, residents, and city officials are all expressing gratitude that everyone involved escaped with only minor injuries.
