I-94 shut down again and again as semitrucks, cars crash in snowstorm

Crashes are racking up on I-94 in Southwest Michigan, as a snowstorm throws down inches of accumulation in Southwest Michigan.

Eastbound I-94 is closed near the Sprinkle Road exit in Kalamazoo for the latest crash, at 9:30 a.m., involving two overturned semitrucks.

All eastbound lanes are currently shut down, and traffic is being rerouted off the interstate and past the crash site, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety said.

There are no reported injuries at this time in the Sprinkle Road crash, KDPS said. Crews are working to clear the road, KDPS said.

It was one of several crashes on I-94 in the region this morning.

There were multiple highway closures throughout the morning on I-94 near Exit 66 in Mattawan, in both eastbound and westbound directions.

Ann Marie Drake said she was a passenger in a vehicle on I-94, and drove up right after a crash involving a semitruck at 9:10 a.m. Monday, in the eastbound lanes between Oshtemo Township and Mattawan.

“Most people were driving cautiously, but it’s so icy that the moment you tap the brakes, you start sliding,” Drake said. “We were in a full-sized, four-wheel-drive pickup truck and we barely were able to avoid running into the semi in front of us as we encountered the accident.”

MDOT reports all lanes are closed on eastbound I-94 at near Mattawan, Exit 66, for the crash.

Westbound lanes were temporarily closed for different crashes Thursday morning, according to MDOT. Westbound crashes appeared to be cleared as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday, though police are still urging drivers to use caution.
