As of November 1, 2024, Slovenia has implemented a new requirement mandating basic Slovenian language proficiency for certain foreign nationals                                                                                                                            seeking permanent residence permits or extending family reunification permits. This policy aims to facilitate better integration of non-EU residents into Slovenian socie

  • Level Required: Applicants must demonstrate A2-level proficiency in Slovenian, as per the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This level is considered “survival level,” focusing on basic communication in everyday situations.

    • Individuals applying for a permanent residence permit.

    • Foreign nationals seeking to extend their family reunification permits.

    • Students accepted into Slovenian-taught study program

    • Family members of EU Blue Card holders.

    • Family members of researchers or those conducting research in Slovenia.

    • Individuals transferred within companies.

    • Applicants who have resided in Slovenia for five continuous 

  • Language Test: The first Slovenian language proficiency test is free of charg

  • Learning Programme: A 180-hour Slovenian language course is available at no cost to applicants needing assistance

Providers: Tests and courses are administered by educational institutions and adult learning organizations involved in non-formal adult educat

  • Before April 30, 2024: No language proficiency requirement.

  • May 1 – October 31, 2024: Applicants must present a certificate of enrollment in a Slovenian language program or proof of completion of an A1-level course.

  • From November 1, 2024: Applicants must provide a certificate confirming successful completion of an A2-level Slovenian language tThese changes reflect Slovenia’s commitment to enhancing integration and ensuring that foreign nationals can effectively participate in daily life.
